That distinction keeps the reveal from being a random second power-up. Black Clover does not say Yuno simply trained hard enough to unlock another attribute. His case is built around two souls, two magical origins, and two grimoires.
Yuno's first grimoire remains tied to Wind Magic
From the beginning, Yuno looks like a straightforward Wind Magic prodigy. He receives a rare four-leaf clover grimoire, develops increasingly advanced wind spells, and is chosen by Sylph, the Wind Spirit.

For most of the story, the natural assumption is simple: Yuno has enormous mana reserves and Wind is his innate attribute.
The Spade arc changes that reading.
Chapter 309 connects the Wind Magic Yuno has used all his life to the other soul inside him: the soul of Licht and Tetia's child, carried forward through the elf reincarnation. That does not make Yuno's growth with Wind Magic fake. He grew up with the attribute, learned to control it, created techniques around it, and built his career as a Magic Knight using it.
The reveal changes where the attribute came from, not what Yuno accomplished with it.
Sylph is not the original source of Yuno's Wind Magic either. She is the Wind Spirit who chose him and dramatically expands what he can do with that attribute, including Spirit Dive and his spirit weapons. Wind was already part of Yuno before Bell joined him.
Star Magic is the attribute that belongs to Yuno himself
The other half of the explanation appears when Zenon pushes Yuno to his limit. While fighting in the Spade Kingdom, another grimoire chooses him, this time bearing the symbol of the kingdom where he was born.
That grimoire contains Star Magic.
Chapter 309 ties the attribute to House Grinberryall. Spade's royal family carries unusual celestial magic: Yuno's mother Ciel uses Moon Magic, while his father Loyce uses Sun Magic. Yuno manifests Star Magic as his own attribute.
This is why the second grimoire should not be read as an upgraded version of the four-leaf book. It represents another source. The Clover grimoire holds the Wind Magic spells Yuno grew up using, while the Spade grimoire gives form to the magic tied to Yuno's own identity and bloodline.
If Star Magic were simply an advanced form of Wind Magic, the story would have little reason to separate them so clearly into two attributes and two grimoires.
Why doesn't Wind Magic disappear when Yuno awakens his own magic?
Because the manga does not frame Star Magic as a replacement.
The elf soul does not vanish the moment the second grimoire appears. Yuno keeps access to his Wind spells and his bond with Sylph, while the Spade grimoire gives him a separate set of Star Magic spells.
The structure is easier to understand when separated:
- Wind Magic: tied to the reincarnated soul of Licht and Tetia's child;
- Star Magic: Yuno's own attribute, connected to his Grinberryall heritage;
- four-leaf Clover grimoire: contains the Wind spells he has developed;
- Spade grimoire: contains Star Magic spells;
- Sylph: remains Yuno's Wind Spirit partner and enhances his Wind-based abilities.
The new reveal expands Yuno's magical structure instead of overwriting the old one.
Yuno's Spade heritage had already prepared part of the answer
Before the second grimoire appeared, Black Clover had already revealed that Yuno was not simply an orphan from Hage. He was born as a prince of the Spade Kingdom and carried away as a baby after the Zogratis family seized power.
Royal blood helps explain his abnormal mana reserves, but it created another question: why was a member of a family associated with celestial magic known exclusively as a Wind mage?
Chapter 309 connects the missing pieces. Spade explains Star Magic. Elf reincarnation explains Wind Magic.
One reveal answers who Yuno was born as. The other explains what other soul also grew inside the same body.
Can Yuno actually use both attributes at the same time?
Yes. The manga eventually goes further than simply having Yuno switch between two books.
Against Zenon, Star Magic immediately changes the geometry of Yuno's fighting style. He can create stars for offense and defense and use Conjunction to instantly relocate between them. That solves a problem Wind Magic did not address in the same way: precise repositioning inside a battlefield dominated by Zenon's Spatial Magic.
Chapter 356 later makes the integration explicit with Star × Wind Spirit Magic: Never-Never Land. The spell combines Star Magic with the Wind Spirit Magic used by Yuno and Sylph in one large-scale technique.
That is the clearest evidence that these are not two incompatible modes that Yuno must turn on and off. Both sources can work together.
Two attributes do not mean any mage can simply obtain a second one
This limit matters for understanding Black Clover's magic system.
The series has other unusual cases involving more than one source of power, but their causes differ. Experiments, devils, spirits, racial traits, or outside interference can all create exceptions. Yuno's situation does not establish a hidden rule where enough training makes an ordinary grimoire generate a second attribute.
His case combines conditions almost nobody else shares: Spade royal blood, a reincarnated elf soul inhabiting the same body, grimoires from two kingdoms, and a partnership with one of the four great elemental spirits.
Yuno is an exception whose cause is built into the story, not proof that the normal rule has stopped applying.
Star Magic changes how Yuno fights, not just how powerful he is
The most interesting part of the second attribute is how it fills gaps in Yuno's existing style.
Wind gives him mobility, range, battlefield control, and spirit weapons. Stars add fixed points in space, their own attacks, defense, and instant relocation. Once those systems start interacting, Yuno becomes far harder to predict than a character who simply received a stronger version of the same spell.
That is what makes the second grimoire more than a numerical upgrade. It does not reveal that Yuno's previous development was false. It reveals that readers had only seen one half of the magical structure supporting him.

Yuno is still the Wind mage who grew up beside Asta. The manga simply reveals why Wind Magic never told his whole story — and why Star Magic can exist beside it without needing to replace it.
