Iron and Greed are undone when their human originals live again
Iron only exists because Kim Chul dies during the Red Gate incident and Jinwoo extracts his shadow. Rewriting history removes the chain of events that led to that death. Kim Chul therefore has a living human existence again, while Iron—the shadow created from his corpse—no longer follows Jinwoo.
Greed has the same dependency. Before he was Greed, he was Hwang Dongsoo. Jinwoo kills Dongsoo after the hunter abducts and tortures Jinho, then turns the body into a shadow soldier. When that history is prevented, Dongsoo is alive again and the Greed identity created from his death is no longer part of Jinwoo’s army.

That distinction matters because it makes their disappearance a consequence rather than an arbitrary selection. The Cup is not singling out two soldiers Jinwoo happened to recruit. The rewritten timeline removes the human deaths that made those two soldiers possible.
The Cup rewrites Earth without resetting Jinwoo to zero
The confusing part is Beru. If the Cup were a conventional save-point reset, every shadow created after the rewind date should vanish, and Beru would obviously qualify. The Ant King had not yet gone through the Jeju Island events that eventually led to Jinwoo extracting his shadow.
But Jinwoo is not reduced to his old powerless self. He carries the Shadow Monarch’s authority across the change and takes the war away from Earth so that humanity does not have to repeat the age of gates. The licensed description for Ize Press/Yen Press’s *Solo Leveling, Vol. 14: Side Stories 1* makes the new status quo especially clear: gates, magic beasts, and hunters are treated as fiction in ordinary society, yet otherworldly shadow-ant creatures are still active around Jinwoo.
So acquisition date alone cannot explain who stays. The more useful question is which living identity the new timeline restores, and which shadow existence remains attached to Jinwoo himself.
Beru has no restored living counterpart in the new timeline
Beru came from the Ant King, whose existence was tied to the Jeju Island crisis and the world of gates and magic beasts. Jinwoo’s rewritten history prevents Earth from entering that same supernatural era. There is therefore no living Ant King restored into the new civilian world in the way Kim Chul and Hwang Dongsoo are restored as humans.
That is why Beru can persist without producing the same contradiction. He is already part of Jinwoo’s Shadow Monarch existence, and the new timeline does not supply another living version of his source that needs to continue a separate life.
The side stories’ shadow ants are important here. They show that the reset did not erase the continuity of Jinwoo’s ant shadows merely because their original Jeju history no longer occurs for the rest of Earth.
“Human shadows vanish, monster shadows remain” is too neat
A common shorthand is that Iron and Greed disappear because they were humans while Beru stays because he was a monster. That gets the three headline cases in the right places, but it sounds more definitive than the story actually is. Solo Leveling never pauses to establish species as the formal trigger for surviving the Cup.
Jinwoo’s army contains shadows from very different sources. Kiba, for example, comes from a High Orc.
Tank comes from a different magic beast, while Kaisel has yet another origin and role. Those examples are useful precisely because they warn against turning a convenient summary into a universal mechanic the series never spells out.
The safer rule for this specific question is about restored identity. When the rewritten history restores the living person whose death created a shadow, that shadow identity is undone. When no equivalent living being is restored, a shadow that Jinwoo carries through the rewind can remain. This accounts for Beru, Iron, and Greed without pretending the manhwa published a technical rulebook for the Cup.
The difference is part of what makes the ending work
The reset would be much less interesting if Jinwoo simply received a perfect clean slate. He gives humanity a world where the gate catastrophe never becomes normal life, but he personally keeps the memory and burden of the war. His shadows are part of that private continuity.
Iron and Greed disappearing also means Kim Chul and Hwang Dongsoo get something their shadow selves could never have: the chance to live as people again. Beru remaining does not take such a restored human life away from anyone.
That is why “Beru stayed because he was a monster” is only half an answer. The sharper explanation is that the new timeline restores Kim Chul and Hwang Dongsoo as living humans, eliminating Iron and Greed, while it does not restore a living Beru/Ant King counterpart. Jinwoo carries Beru’s shadow existence across the reset instead.
