That distinction is what makes their partnership interesting. Nanahoshi is not outsourcing the research to the protagonist, and Rudeus is not solving her problem simply by being overpowered. She builds the method; he provides the fuel that lets the method exist outside the page.

Nanahoshi has spent years turning her goal of returning home into a sequence of controlled experiments. The anime shows her buried in diagrams and layered magic-circle designs, while Rudeus becomes indispensable at the exact point where theory has to produce a physical result.

In the original scene behind “Phase Four,” Rudeus places his hand on the circle and pours mana into it. The structure pulls energy out of him at an extraordinary rate. The precise comparison is less important than the conclusion: by this stage, Nanahoshi's setup has become so demanding that Rudeus's abnormal mana reserve is no longer a convenient bonus. It is part of the infrastructure.
That is why a random talented student at Ranoa cannot simply take his place. The circle needs somebody who can feed it enough energy for the design to be tested at all.
Why magic circles suit Nanahoshi better than ordinary spellcasting
Nanahoshi is trying to solve a research problem, not win a duel. She needs something that can be drawn, modified, layered, compared, and tested again. Magic circles give her a structure in which individual conditions can change without throwing away the entire method.
That makes the project feel closer to engineering than conventional fantasy spellcasting. Cliff and Zanoba contribute, and Rudeus assists with both work and mana, but Nanahoshi is the person turning failures into the next version of the system.
The two leads therefore solve opposite halves of the same problem. A sophisticated circle without enough mana remains inert; a gigantic mana pool without a precise design has no target. Nanahoshi gives the energy instructions. Rudeus makes sure there is enough energy to follow them.
Episode 7 finally shows what Rudeus's mana is buying them
“Phase Four” makes years of abstract progress visible. Once Rudeus begins feeding the circle, it lights up in changing colors that remind him of the Teleport Incident. That resemblance matters because he knows better than almost anyone what uncontrolled displacement magic can do.
The experiment nevertheless succeeds: the group summons a watermelon from the world Nanahoshi and Rudeus originally came from. The important part is not just that an Earth object appears. The test has crossed into organic matter, which is a much more meaningful step for Nanahoshi's larger objective.
It is also an imperfect success. The intended target was not necessarily that exact fruit, which tells Nanahoshi something useful: the system can now reach the right kind of result without yet having perfect specificity. That is why the breakthrough opens another phase instead of ending the research.
“Phase Four” is a milestone, not a doorway home
It is easy to hear the episode title and assume Nanahoshi is nearly finished. The anime is more careful than that. Summoning an organic object proves that her accumulated theory works under a new set of conditions. Sending a person across worlds is a much larger problem.
The next challenge is precision. Nanahoshi needs to move from broad targeting toward specifying exactly what the circle should select. That is also why she wants access to someone with deeper expertise in summoning magic.
After the breakthrough, she offers to introduce Rudeus to Perugius Dola as repayment for his help. Yoruneko already has a separate explanation of why Rudeus goes to the Chaos Breaker. For Nanahoshi's research, the key point is simpler: reaching this result gives her a reason to seek knowledge beyond what the Ranoa group can provide on its own.
Teleportation is why Rudeus treats the experiment with caution
Mushoku Tensei had already shown practical teleportation circles before Season 3. Rudeus has used them for travel, but his understanding of displacement is also inseparable from the Fittoa catastrophe. When Nanahoshi's circle begins to resemble the light of that incident, the scene briefly turns a scientific-looking test into something much more unsettling.
Nanahoshi's entire project is an attempt to move in the opposite direction of that disaster. The Teleport Incident was massive and uncontrollable; her laboratory work is incremental, measurable, and deliberately constrained.
That contrast also explains why Rudeus's power alone is not the answer. Huge amounts of mana can be dangerous or useless without control. Nanahoshi's achievement is building a structure that can tell that energy what to do.
Rudeus and Nanahoshi are useful to each other because they are opposites
They came from the same Japan but entered this world in radically different ways. Rudeus was reborn and built a new life there. Nanahoshi arrived carrying her old identity with her and continues to orient her research around getting home.
Their relationship to magic mirrors that difference. Rudeus grew into the world's magical rules and developed a famously large reserve. Nanahoshi approaches those rules from the outside, breaking a seemingly impossible problem into stages and diagrams.
Calling Rudeus a “mana battery” is not entirely wrong, but it misses half the idea. He is the energy source for a system Nanahoshi has spent years designing. His mana gives the experiment scale; her research gives his mana direction. The Season 3 watermelon breakthrough is what happens when those two resources finally line up.
Can Nanahoshi use magic normally?
She does not operate like a magician born in this world. Her summoning research depends on magic circles and external power, with Rudeus supplying mana for the most demanding experiments shown by the anime.
Does the watermelon mean Nanahoshi can already return to Earth?
No. It demonstrates major progress in summoning organic matter from the other world. The experiment still has targeting limitations, and moving a person is a far more difficult problem.
Why is Rudeus so hard to replace in the lab?
His mana reserve is exceptional. The Phase Four setup consumes so much energy that even Rudeus questions who else could realistically operate it at that scale.
Why does Perugius become relevant after the experiment?
