In Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, magic is never only a contest to see who can fire the most destructive attack. Frieren collects grimoires out of curiosity, memory and usefulness even when an effect looks ridiculous next to battlefield magic. The official “●● no Mahou” mini-anime pushes that idea into comedy: its short episodes use original scenarios to give the cast spells that solve mundane, social or simply silly problems.

This list uses ten spells officially featured in the mini-anime, with one important distinction: because these shorts use original spin-off scenarios, the ten situations should not automatically be presented as ten manga or main-TV canon confirmations. What they safely demonstrate is the short series’ own premise — playing with Frieren’s love of everyday magic. This is not a ranking. The criterion is what each spell can accomplish that offensive magic cannot: improve a routine, change a conversation, clean a pan, create comfort or even turn dinner into an ethical problem.

Magic that makes you say what you are thinking

Unfiltered honesty

The first short starts with a dangerously simple idea: remove the gap between thought and speech. In battle, that sounds awful.

It solves communication blocks that brute force cannot touch.

Magic that removes only the alcohol from a drink

Precision over force

Removing only the alcohol from a drink is exactly the kind of magic that might fail to impress in a combat exam and still delight an entire tavern. The second short plays with the precision of the effect: the point is to remove alcohol without simply destroying the experience of the drink.

It preserves the experience of a drink without the alcoholic effect.

Magic that lets you wake up at a set time

Magic for routine

Fern has to deal with an enemy for which an attack spell is useless: Frieren in the morning. The third mini episode revolves around magic that lets someone wake up at a predetermined time, turning a routine problem into a magical service.

It turns punctuality into a practical travel and routine tool.

Magic that makes your body smell good

A social solution

Magic that makes the body smell good sounds like the sort of grimoire a “serious” adventurer would leave on the shelf. Frieren and Fern naturally want to test it, and Stark becomes the center of the experiment.

It addresses hygiene and social comfort rather than an enemy.

Magic that gives you good luck

Probability as a spell

The fifth spell promises something no offensive technique can reliably control: luck. The party tests it on Stark, and the comedy comes from an impossible question — is the magic truly working, or would the fortunate coincidences have happened anyway?

It interferes with chance and opportunity instead of increasing damage.

Magic that removes stubborn grease

Kitchen magic

Few ideas summarize this list better than magic for removing stubborn grease. In the sixth short, the spell stops being merely quirky when Sein recognizes an obvious business application.

It saves domestic labor and can even create commercial value.

Magic that lets you speak extremely fast without stumbling

Accelerated communication

Speaking extremely fast without stumbling sounds like a comedy trick, but it solves a limitation attacks cannot touch: information bandwidth. The seventh short turns verbal fluency into a magical effect.

It increases the speed at which information can be transmitted.

Magic that lets you understand how fish feel

Uncomfortable empathy

Understanding how a fish feels sounds like collector’s curiosity until there is a freshly caught fish sitting in front of the group. In the eighth short, Frieren and Fern use the spell and dinner becomes much less simple once the animal effectively gains a “voice” they can understand.

It turns a barrier between species into understandable information.

Magic that makes you taller

Physical convenience

Magic that makes someone taller is a ready-made visual gag, but the concept still answers a concrete need: changing a physical trait that limits everyday tasks. Reaching a high shelf is already a more immediate use case than many battle techniques designed for a fight that may never happen.

It solves small physical inconveniences without relying on strength.

Magic that cools the air around your body

Thermal comfort

On a hot day, magic that cools the air around your body sounds like one of those “useless” grimoires everyone would suddenly want. Mini-anime episode 16 uses exactly that premise and then adds the catch: controlling the intensity is harder than expected, so comfort can turn into too much cold.

It creates personal climate comfort without depending on combat.

In the end, the point is not that a clean pan is somehow “more important” than surviving a battle. The point is that Frieren’s world becomes richer when magical knowledge can also serve sleep, luck, conversation, food and comfort. That is why an apparently ridiculous grimoire can still be a reward that genuinely excites her.
