Season 4 makes the wrong conclusion extremely easy to reach. The story places the book right before Subaru's identity collapses, then shows another Book of the Dead genuinely interfering with his thoughts. The book is not a meaningless red herring. It is simply a different memory-related danger from Gluttony's attack.
Reid's Book Looks Guilty Because It Comes Right Before the Amnesia
At the Pleiades Watchtower, Subaru needs a way to get past Reid Astrea. He decides to search Taygeta Library for Reid's Book of the Dead, hoping the swordsman's memories might reveal a weakness. The crucial mistake is doing it alone.
Tappei Nagatsuki later addressed that choice in an official Q&A. He explained that if Otto had gone to the Watchtower, Subaru would likely have asked him to come along, changing the chain of events that leads to the memory loss. The solo trip to read Reid's book sets the disaster in motion, but that is not the same as saying the book itself removes the memories.
It is the difference between a story trigger and the direct mechanism. The book puts Subaru in danger. Louis is the one who changes what he remembers.
Louis Arneb Is the Reason an Amnesiac Subaru Exists
The decisive event happens in the Corridor of Memories, a space connected to Od Laguna and the memories of people. There Subaru encounters Louis Arneb, the third Gluttony sibling alongside Lye Batenkaitos and Roy Alphard.
Louis directly connects the amnesiac Subaru to Gluttony having eaten “Natsuki Subaru's” memories. Later material again identifies his unexpected encounter with Gluttony as the reason those memories were lost.
That is why his amnesia has such a specific shape. Subaru still knows how to speak, think and function. He remembers the boy who lived in Japan, but not the life built after his summoning: Emilia, Beatrice, Rem, Julius, his deaths, his choices and the relationships that shaped the Subaru everyone else knows.
Gluttony has not destroyed his ability to remember. It has removed a body of memories that made up an enormous part of the person he had become.
Meili's Book of the Dead Really Is Dangerous—Just in a Different Way
This is where the mystery becomes convincing. Meili's Book of the Dead genuinely affects Subaru. Reading it is not like reading a biography. He experiences Meili's life from the inside, including her emotions and point of view, until elements of her personality begin bleeding into his own thoughts.
The Arc 6 Chapter 90 web novel text draws the line clearly: Subaru's amnesia and the danger of the Books of the Dead are not exactly the same thing. His missing memories were not an effect of the book, even though reading Meili's book nearly allowed her personality to overwrite parts of his thoughts and feelings.
Both statements can therefore be true:
- Books of the Dead can seriously affect the reader;
- Reid's Book of the Dead did not steal Subaru's memories.
The Book Opened the Door; Gluttony Did the Damage
The cleanest way to understand the sequence is to separate its steps. Subaru searches for Reid's book to gain information. That choice sends him into the Corridor of Memories. There he encounters Louis, and that encounter explains the condition in which he returns.
Saying “Subaru lost his memories after reading a Book of the Dead” gets the chronology right but the causality wrong. Re:Zero deliberately lets those two ideas blur together while Subaru himself is working with incomplete information.
The smart part is that the book remains relevant. It is dangerous, it is tied to the same themes, and it leads him to the place where the real attack happens. It just is not the weapon that removed his memories.
Subaru's Case Is Not Identical to Other Gluttony Victims
The anime had already shown that Gluttony can produce different outcomes. Crusch loses memories. Julius has his name eaten and is forgotten by other people. Rem suffers an even more severe result after both name and memories are taken.
Subaru does not fit neatly into those cases either. His relationship with Authorities and the world's rules has always been unusual, but Arc 6 establishes one useful boundary: he can still lose his own memories to Gluttony. Treating him as simply “immune to Gluttony” is therefore too broad.
The amnesiac Subaru is not a fake replacement. He is Subaru with the part of his history that explains his relationships torn away. His paranoia makes sense because he is surrounded by people who treat him as someone deeply important while he lacks the experiences that would make their trust feel earned.
Getting His Memories Back Means Reconnecting the Two Subarus
The resolution follows the same logic. Subaru does not recover by cancelling an effect of Reid's book. His way back runs through the Corridor of Memories, where he reconnects with the Natsuki Subaru shaped by the experiences that had been separated from him, while confronting Louis.
That makes the amnesia arc more than a power-system puzzle. The memoryless Subaru initially looks at his previous self as an impossible hero he cannot live up to. Following that person's traces teaches him something less glamorous and more important: the old Subaru was scared, flawed and breakable too. What made him different was the accumulation of relationships and choices he refused to abandon.
The Book of the Dead works as excellent misdirection because it really does manipulate memory and appears at exactly the right moment. Once Re:Zero separates trigger from cause, however, Subaru's amnesia points to Louis Arneb and the Authority of Gluttony. The search for the book led Subaru to her; the book did not erase the life he had built.
